Pendine Sands Carmarthenshire South Wales, Speed beach is a seven-mile beach based on the shores of Carmarthen Bay. It stretches west to east from Gilman Point to Laugharne Sands. There’s a reason why this beach is so popular and that’s because there’s something for everyone here! From relaxing on the beach with an ice cream in hand to kayaking in the sea on a hot summers day.
Speed beach is seven miles of heaven…. quite literally! This spacious sandy beach can be visited all year round. The beach is well-maintained and has stunning views in all directions. Surrounded by cliffs, rock pools and wild cliff top paths which in the summer months are bursting with wildflowers and wildlife.
After an extensive multi-million-pound regeneration the promenade is complete with easy access to the beach, Asian Fusion restaurant and the Parry Thomas Centre which has everything from, ice-cream, kayak hire and takeaway food. This beach has everything that you could wish for – for that perfect family day out.
Parking and Accessibility
As of 2020 parking in Pendine is between, £2 - £10 although there are options for all day parking too. The parking spaces are subject to availability, and we suggest arriving before peak hours. Blue Badge holders get one hour of free parking once a parking ticket has been purchased. The sea front has two disability spaces. This is also next to the toilet block, which also has disability facilities.
Pendine is accessible for members of the public with limited mobility however there are some uneven floor surfaces. The beach has a ramp which wheelchair uses can use to access the beach. There are benches and places to perch along the promenade, beach and all have a beautiful sea view. This would be the perfect opportunity to grab some ice cream and watch the day go by.
Public toilets can be found around the beach. This is subjected to Covid-19 regulations, and we cannot guarantee that these will be open during your visit.
Lifeguard services are provided throughout the summer months. Dogs not allowed between the slipways May - September. Please note that these services are subjected to change.
History
Surrounding the beach are wild cliff paths which were used in World War II for D-Day landings – cool aye?
This site is home to historic land speed records and a part time Ministry of Defence firing ranges. In the 1990’s the sands were used for car and motorcycle races. The reason for this is that the sands have such a firm surface and cars could hit record breaking speeds. Motorcycle magazine once described it as, “the finest natural speedway imaginable”.
Fast forward a few years and the Ministry of Defence acquired Pendine Sands during World War II and used it as a firing range. To this day the beach is still owned by the Ministry of Defence.
Shops and Food
With less than a five-minute walk from both the beach and the car park the promenade is packed with:
• Lotus Restaurant and takeaway (Asian Fusion)
• Cambrian Ice Cream Parlour
• Chad ‘n’ Olly’s Beach Hut
• Motor Museum of Speed Parry Thomas
There is every type of food for every type of appetite. Our favourites? Lotus’s Stir-Fried Chicken in Black Bean Sauce with a side of Chicken Samosas and for desert a double scooping of Cambrian’s Rolo Ripple ice cream sat on the beach while watching the tide come in. There’s nothing quite like it. This is subjected to Covid-19 regulations, and we cannot guarantee that these will be open during your visit.
Reviews
“Great beach for a walk and cave-exploring - just don't go too far across the beach as signs warn you of potential shooting from a nearby military camp”
“It was the first time in 58 years for me to go to Pendine Sands, what a fabulous location. And I can’t wait to return in a few weeks time with the Grandchildren. Stunning beach, very clean, cheap car parking. Not as busy as Tenby so a pleasant surprise on a bank holiday Monday. If you have not been to Pendine give it a go, you will not be disappointed”
